In the 1670s the Jesuit mission of St. Francis Xavier du Sault near Montreal became home to increasing numbers of Christian Indians from over 20 different tribes, particularly Mohawks and other Iroqouis fleeing persecution in their homeland. Six days after the Sault's most famous resident Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha died in 1680, she appeared in glory to Fr. Claude Chauchetiere, with a prophetic vision of an Indian being burned at the stake — a prophecy fulfilled in the capture and death of several of her fellow Christians.

The inspiring stories of the Sault's Christian heroes were compiled from eyewitness accounts by the French Jesuit Fr. Pierre Cholenec (1641 - 1723): Etienne Te Ganonakoa, who three times made the sign of the cross with mutilated hands; Françoise Gonanhatenha who gave thanks as a cross was carved into her chest; Marguerite Garongouas who at the stake refused water to emulate Christ's thirst upon the cross; Etienne Haonhouentsiontaouet who chose instant death rather than tempt his faith; and lastly, Jeanne Gouastahra, Kateri's companion and "the most faithful imitator of her virtues."
